EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar announced that an advance team of EU monitors  arrived in Yerevan, Armenia, today.

“The 27 Member States have acted rapidly to respond to Armenia’s request. The aim of the EU’s deployment will be to monitor the situation and support Armenia-Azerbaijan stabilisation on the ground,” wrote Toivo Klaar on Twitter.

Earlier this week, High Representative Josep Borrell held separate bilateral phone calls with Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan.

Borrell briefed on the ongoing technical preparations for the deployment of the EU Mission.

He also reiterated the EU’s full commitment to contributing to de-escalation between both countries and continuing efforts at the highest levels to achieve sustainable peace in the South Caucasus.
