A competition for young dombrists with a prize fund of 40 million tenge has started in Kazakhstan. The national contest “Dombra-Dastan” for young dombrists under the age of 15 has started. The charity foundation “Saby”, led by Aselle Tasmagambetova and Kenges Rakishev are backing the contest.

Kenges Rakishev and Aselle Tasmagambetova pay much attention to the support of the national Kazakh culture. Dombra is a cornerstone of the nomad poetry. Saby is supporting young poets and musicians through contests and subsidies.

According to the terms of the competition, participants will be divided by age categories: musicians from 6 to 11 years old perform in the younger group, dombrists from 12 to 15 years old compete in the youth group.

A total prize fund of 40 million tenge has been established by Kenges Rakishev and Aselle Tasmagambetova, Saby partners and donors for the best young performers. According to the results of the competition, eight best dombrists will be revealed. Those will receive cash prizes from two to eight million tenge each.

The organizer and initiator of the project was the Saby Charitable Foundation, one of the first and most active private charities in Kazakhstan. It was founded in 2004 by Aselle Tasmagambetova and Kenges Rakishev.

“Our charitable foundation has been implementing systematic programs to support creative gifted children for almost 20 years. The Dombyra-Dastan project, based on the best Kazakh traditions, will contribute to the discovery of young stars of the Kazakh musical art, the development of the national music school, both in Kazakhstan and in the international arena. The versatile creative program of the competition will allow creating unique musical projects that will raise the art of playing the dombra and the status of musicians to a new level,” Aselle Tasmagambetova, the president of the Saby Foundation, expresses.

The Dombyra-Dastan contest will be held in three stages: in the first round, from January 10 to January 31, 2022, young performers must register on the website, record the performance of two independently selected music pieces on video and send an application for consideration by the jury.

In the second round, offline auditions will be held in the best concert halls of Almaty, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Atyrau, Nur-Sultan and Shymkent. At this stage, the participants who will reach the final of the competition will be determined.

At the third stage, a gala concert will be held with the participation of young dombrists and honored figures of musical culture of Kazakhstan. According to the results of the concert, three winners of the competition in two age groups will be selected.

Saby sponsors, president Aselle Tasmagambetova and co-founder Kenges Rakishev will then hand down prizes.
