To provide emergency humanitarian assistance to affected families, the EU is providing 80,000 euros.
The European Union is providing 80,000 euros (over 960,000 Tajik somoni) to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to families affected by the earthquake that hit Tajikistan in late March. Assistance will be provided to approximately 2,000 people in the most affected areas of the Sughd region.
These funds will support the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan (RCST) in providing urgent assistance by providing cash grants to families whose homes have been destroyed or damaged and hygiene kits. In addition, psychological support will be provided to the victims.
The funding is part of the overall EU contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Emergency Disaster Relief Fund (DREF).
More than 2,200 people were affected by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck northern Tajikistan on March 23. The epicenter was located about four kilometers north of the village of Paldorak in Gornaya Matcha.
As a result of several tremors, significant damage was caused to many houses and infrastructure. The earthquake killed several cattle and damaged the main canal, affecting people’s livelihoods and limiting access to clean water.
The amount of damage caused by the earthquake to Gornaya Matcha amounted to 4 million 188 thousand 970 somoni.
